Closer
Wednesday was our full committee session of government. It was nerve wrecking but I made it through. I also went to go help out with some National Honor Society stuff after school. I was extremely bored, and I knew no one there so I was pretty much left alone the whole time. But I got everything done. Thursday I had a choir concert. It wasn't great. We all sucked and I hate almost all the students in it but whatever. Friday we met the author for Mexican Whiteboy and he was very interesting, great personality and overall a great character, I kinda fell for him. I also ditched my last hour which is choir, I didn't want to see familiar faces because they were very disrespectful the day before. So I went to my car and I completely forgot about my yearbook, I stayed in my car for an hour or so and went back to try and get a copy early because I have early dismissal. I was all over the place, I went up stairs, downstairs, over a bridge and just all over. But I got it. Its been a pretty hectic week. And I've been feeling pretty down because of it. I am now honestly terrified about going to college. And I just wanted to take a moment to calm my ass down by writing it down. School is four days away from being over. I guess its just that, the fear, excitement, and adrenaline rush a person gets when something that's impacted their life is almost over. I'm going through a lot. I'm going to be OK, I'm going to be fine, my future will be prosperous. I will survive.

Anthony Ausgang x MGMT “Congratulations”- New Album Cover
In hipster history, the 1990s saw a resurgence in kitschy countercultural pastimes like swing dancing, tattoo culture, and tiki/retro lounge. At the same time, an underground art movement associated with those outre interests and born in Southern California was also catapulted into view. Fueled by the Internet, a worldwide audience emerged for art that could have otherwise stayed firmly ensconced in the murky shadows of the art world and underground culture. This new art scene was tongue-in-cheekily referred to as “Lowbrow,” and it championed a sense of working class ethics and the festishization of nostalgia and countercultural imagery in a cartoony, fun manner. Anthony Ausgang is celebrated as a pioneer of Lowbrow. His tripped-out, surrealistic narratives feature cartoon characters in exaggeratedly provocative situations. Today on Boing Boing, Ausgang debuts his newest painting, an album cover for psych-rock duo MGMT’s new record Congratulations, to be released on April 13 on Columbia. Ausgang’s next solo show is in November at Santa Monica’s CoproGallery. Last weekend, I spoke with Ausgang about Lowbrow, Pop Surrealism, and the MGMT connection. -Daniel Lahodavia jetsetgraffiti
